Music: Skye Galaxy at Two Fish

I’m at Rose Borchovski’s Two Fish celebrating her fourth rezz-day and listening to Skye Galaxy. This is one of the most packed events I have been to in a while in Second Life. The music is truly breathtaking (I can’t even be bothered by SaveMe Oh’s running commentary). Skye is truly a master, his voice alternating between soft, powerful and, yes, at times bordering on angelic. I find myself so caught up in this sound. Bravo, Rose, for making this happen! Fashion: Eshi Otawara-Shop

It is no secret, Eshi Otawara is one of the best high end fashion designers in Second Life, some would say the best. The design of her store build is plain and straight forward; black walls with framed displays for the clothes, black floor and no roof. This is a no nonsense design that simply serves the purpose of highlighting the beautiful items she creates. In this store, Eshi sells clothing, shoes, make-up and hair. Each item is unlike anything I have seen before in Second Life. A friend of mine said that these creations are more like art than clothing and I have to agree. A dress generally consists of a high collar, tight bodice and an extravagant skirt, made of see-through lace, gems and silk-like fabric. A lavish head piece is usually included. To me, these creations are like flowers and delicate, yet also forceful in their impression. Check this store out if you haven’t already: http://slurl.com/secondlife/blackLiquid/55/64/503.
Places: DD’s Diner & Fightclub

I just stepped into DD’s Diner & Fightclub. At the moment its empty, but I know it can get pretty crowded here when various DJs play. I think this diner replaced the Laundromat, which had a similar atmosphere. The diner is very well constructed, both on the outside and the inside, its sort of grungy looking. Especially on the inside, the attention to detail is immediately noticeable. A few eggs are frying in a hot pan on the stove, mustard and ketchup bottles are found on each of the diner tables, some sandwiches stand on the counter and fan is slowly rotating in the corner. There’s a jukebox and dance balls, for those of you who like to dance. This is a great place that should not be missed. Check it out at: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Shoemaker/201/127/27
Ahren Art Gallery closed

Due to prim limitations on the sim Nordan om Jorden, on which both Nordan Art and Ahren Art Gallery are located, I was forced to close and remove Ahren Art Gallery today. This was the gallery that I built and where I exhibited my work. It was with a heavy heart that I closed it, but I had no choice. The gallery might open on a different location in the future. Thank you for your support of the gallery for the past months.
Reading: Jayjay Zifanwe interprets Snow White

Sitting on Snow White’s glass coffin, a piece created by Faery Sola, Jayjay Zifanwe today gave an oral interpretation of the fairy tale Snow White as it had been told 5000 years ago. This was a dramatized version of the story, incorporating numerous well-known Second Life figures like, for instance, SaveMe Oh and Apmel Goosson. The audience encountered here a side of Jayjay previously unknown. The actor Jayjay, changed his voice to fit each individual in the story, successfully capturing the essence of their character. It was a surprise and a pleasure to experience Jayjay in this very playful and dramatic way. Looking forward to more! Check out Apmel Goosson’s blog about this too at http://apmel.blogspot.com/
Nordan Art Opening: January 22, 2011

It seems there was an explosion of color, movement and sound at Nordan Art tonight. What a spectacular show it was! It was a Betty Tureaud extravaganza with the music of Ultraviolet Alter complementing her works perfectly. People were walking around for long periods of time, exploring the interactive art, pressing buttons and jumping into balls, wanting more color and movement. Ultra’s music was magical and we literally danced for hours. I apologize to those of you were not able to teleport in due to sim limitations. Take a look at Apmel Goosson’s blog on this event as well at http://apmel.blogspot.com/. Please come and check out this exhibit when you have a chance, it goes until February 22, 2011. Next opening, showing Rebeca Bashly, Rose Borchovski and Helene Lytton, on March 5, 2011 at 2 PM. Photos above by Betty Tureaud.
Fashion: Vita’s Boudoir

There are a handful of truly exquisite high end fashion stores in Second Life and Vita’s Boudoir is one of them. The building itself is marvelous, a modern three floor glass complex, set in space, with plenty of Natsha Lemton’s magical art work swirling around both on the inside and outside. The clothes here are truly extraordinary, in fact, I haven’t seen anything like it since I first discovered Eshi Otawara. A dress usually has a theme, which is represented with feathers, lace, ribbons, flowers and other objects from nature, and is shaped into the most feminine and unique creation. I haven’t seen one item in this store that I did not immediately wanted to purchase and wear. Check out this place when you have a moment, its worth the trip: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Bonaire12/162/130/997
Music: ((-HardBeatZ StaTioN-))

If you’re into DrumNBass, this is the place to go. I found ((-HardBeatZ StaTioN-)) accidentally yesterday while looking for another place and I returned today, curious. When I was there yesterday a handful of people were dancing, today its empty, except for the Dj who is sleeping on a black leather couch. This place is located in what seems to be an abandoned subway station, there is an empty, graffiti covered subway car still on the rails. Enormous loudspeakers face the dance floor, two dance poles are in the corner, a few worn leather couches stand off to the side and a noticed a few rats running over my feet. I love the music here, only DrumNBass. This please place has a very underground sort of feel to it. Check it out at http://slurl.com/secondlife/BassLine%20Island/119/20/1013
Interview: Grafx Newbold

It is such a great pleasure to have the opportunity to interview for this blog Grafx Newbold, one of the five Inspire Space Park creators (the other four are Earth Primbee, Raphael Cremorne, Marcus Inkpen and Sharni Azalee). We had a hard time connecting due to the fact that we were rarely in Second Life at the same time, but we finally we did. Here is the interview that followed. Pictured above are Raphael Cremorne, Earth Primbee and Grafx Newbold.
Flora Nordenskiold: I think I can safely say that Inspire Space Park is one of the ten most popular sites in Second Life. Its a favorite destination for many of us, me included, and it’s always crowded. Can you tell us how Inspire Space Park came about and also what do you think is the key to its success?
Grafx Newbold: This is a link on how Inspire Space Park came about: http://virtuallifemedia.com/blog3/?page_id=8. The key to its success is the relaxed natural feel we have created and the music. People love to come and stay for hours to get away from all the craziness and gestures and things in Second Life. We also unknowingly created a space many people call home. It’s almost like a tourist destination, so we see all types of people come through which is very interesting to many folks. Inspire Space Park is a hub so to speak that most people come through during their Second Life travels. Security has been a huge thing to provide at the park, and a lot of people come because they know they won’t get pushed or grieved. It can fit very large avatars as well. Open space and natural design I think really makes people feel like there is more than just a video game. It’s more than that and it is a piece of art anyone can come be inside even when we are sleeping.
Flora Nordenskiold: One of my favorite things at Inspire Space Park is dancing, not only because of the inspiring surroundings but also because of the incredible music. Can you tell us more about the music at Inspire Space Park?
Grafx Newbold: The music is essential to the park, we try to keep it chilled and go back and forth about what music to play. I created the stream we use most of the time, besides djing as does Earth, we also use several online streams and switch to help keep it fresh.
Flora Nordenskiold: What inspires you to create in Second Life and what are some of the challenges that you have come up against?
Grafx Newbold: Honestly, I’m not so inspired to create at the moment, so its nice to have a park that is finished so we can sit back and enjoy it without the pressure to keep creating, although we do here and there.
Flora Nordenskiold: You have been in Second Life since 2006. What are some of the best and the worst things about Second Life and how have things changed over time?
Grafx Newbold: Well, lag and the lack of true customer support is the worst by far. The people from all over the world and meeting them is the best thing. Bringing people together. Where ever they are from they can relate to inspire.
Flora Nordenskiold: Finally, I love Second Life, but I know I also sometimes struggle finding time for it. There are other times when I ask myself why I keep doing it. What is in your opinion the magical quality of Second Life that keeps us coming back?
Grafx Newbold: I guess i just need to socialize or express myself through music and visuals. It’s certainly not because Linden Lab has made it work so well, because it certainly doesn’t, but we put up with it. I think because we are human we are drawn together.
Places: SaliMar

A good friend of mine suggested I visit SaliMar again, which I did. When I arrived I remembered how struck I had been by its beauty in the past. Standing on the sandy beach, there was a small colorful housing complex, shacks really, to my left and in the distance I could see shellina Winkler’s art installation, “Dream.” I recalled that there must be some work by Nur Moo here as well. I started walking up the stairs to the town itself. Once I was about to enter, there was a wall with several teleport options. This is a small, ancient looking town on the top if a hill, consisting of stone houses and shops. Art of all kinds can be found here. What strikes me the most about this place is the attention to detail. Flower bushes, windows, lanterns and other items (great textures) are placed in such a way that it looks like they have been there forever, I don’t know how to explain it in any other way. This is a tremendously beautiful, peaceful and romantic place. There are lot’s of things to explore here, please make a visit: http://slurl.com/secondlife/SaliMar/137/116/22
